Catalina - now files gone

Upgraded to Catalina on Nov. 10. Most files went into recents. Just checked again cause I wanted to start moving them and now they are all gone. I have lost about 5oo gigs from my hard drive. What is going on?

Recents is a search folder. Nothing is stored in there. It shows the "recently used" files, but they are still stored wherever they were.
