Why can't I scan in multiple pages of a document in the new version of MacOS??

It used to be that if you scanned continuously without closing the scan window all the scans would merge into one document. Now they all save as separate documents. This makes scanning multiple pages a big mess, and at the very least creates an unnecessary step. Plus I couldn't get the export to PDF feature to work the way that the support article says it's supposed to. What's going on here, Apple??
