Can't specify new window or tab start with in Safari Preferences - General

In Safari Preferences - General, the only window preference I can choose is the "Safari opens with" line. All other window and tab options are greyed, including the Homepage option. Help!

I tried the solution suggested (sudo dscl . mcxdeleteall $HOME in the Terminal then restart). The terminal responded on restart with "Restored session...." Unfortunately, it did not fix my greyed out Homepage setting. Can I reinstall Safari without having to reinstall the OS?

Was I virused, or does anyone know why this happened?

To reinstall Safari, you have to reinstall the OS.

You can check for Malware. Try downloading this program which was written by Thomas R, a long time poster. The program will search for malware/adware. The program will do the work for you which makes it easy. It may be necessary to run more than one scan. After running the scans, restart the computer.

Malwarebytes uninstall

Woo Hoo! Fixed it! I installed OS Catalina, but that did not fix the issue of a locked Safari Preferences - General window.

When I started Safari I got a popup that asked if MacWebService could administer my machine. Hmmm, that didn't sound right. I downloaded and ran Malwarebytes per your suggestion; it found MacWebService and quarantined it.

I then went to System Preferences/Profiles, and it was full of MacWebService entries. I deleted all of them ( - key). The MacWebService entries were the only entries, so the profile was empty.

I restarted and found the profile had disappeared, and Safari Preferences worked as it should.

Thanks for your help!
