Photos was unable to open library...(1000).

I upgraded to OSX to Catalina on my Mac Mini (Late 2012) and since then I am unable to open my photos library, getting error "Photos was unable to open library...(1000).

I have all my photos on a external server, a Synology (DS 212) DiskStation where i am saving all my Photos (~200 GB) and iTunes music (340 GB). iTunes is working fine, but Photos cannot open at all since the Catalina upgrade.

I tried several times going through the "Updating Library" and "Repairing Library" process which both complete to 100% however in the end i get the following error message.

Everything was working fine, before upgrading to Catalina.

How can this be fixed?

Mac mini, macOS 10.15

Quit Photos > hold the Alt (option) and open Photos > see if you can choose and designate the Library on the server as your system library. see > Designate a System Photo Library in Photos - Apple Support
