Apple TV free trial

I signed up for the free trial on Apple TV after buying a new iPhone 11 but everything seems to cost money to rent or buy. What exactly is free with my year trial?

The subscription is for Apple TV+ (note the differentiating ‘plus’), with its own Apple-produced content, identifiable by the ‘tv+’ logo.
The Apple TV app also provides access to the iTunes Store movies and TV shows. Those are not included with the Apple TV+ subscription. These are buy or rent.
The Apple TV app also provides access to content from 3rd party channels, which each requires a per-channel subscription. Those are not included with the Apple TV+ subscription.
