Will time machine automatically backup my computer and an external hard drive at the same time?

Yes, it will attempt to backup all connected drives that aren't specifically excluded.

Yes, if you select both as backup disks in System Preferences > Time Machine > Select Disk it will backup both. Not at the same time but first one, then the other.

I don't think I made my self clear. I want to back up my computer and my external harddrive plugged into my computer, both to another portable hard drive I have selected?
