What adapter are you using exactly?

iTunes movies are protected and require the digital AV adapter to HDMI, to support the HDCP protection. They will not play over the VGA or other non HDCP compatible adapter.

Many different ways, depending on what is available to you.

You can use an Apple TV to airplay the movie from the iPad, you can use the digital av adapter to connect the ipad to the Tv via an hdmi cable. You could if your TV supports it, use the TV app directly on the TV or even Airplay directly to the TV if your TV supports it.
