How can I save my IMovie on my desktop and in what kind of format I'll be able to use?

From an iMovie project click on the share button (the little square with the upwards pointing arrow in it) located in the top right hand corner of your screen. A box will appear with several share options. Click on File in the share box and designate the destination as your desktop. iMovie shares out (saves) as an Mp4/AAC file with all share settings except for Best Quality (pro res), in which case the file will be a .mov file.
