macbook shutting down

I have an early 2015 MacBook Pro 13 inch which keeps shutting down without warning. It does not go through the usual shut down process, but the screen just goes blank and then I have to restart it. I have tried charging for 8 hours when battery is less than 90% and also the SMC reset recommended by apple. Any other solutions?

I apologize. My head was somewhere else at the time. If you are using Catalina, then the system is completely locked. You cannot change the filename or delete the file. That solution cannot be accomplished on a Catalina system drive.

Computer Shuts Down for No Apparent Reason

The following was posted here by another user whose username I do not know. If the user who posted this recognizes the following, please let me know so I may give credit where credit is due.

This is what I learned:

  • The computer silently (without logging any errors) shuts off when one CPU core is put in an unstable state. (low frequency, low voltage, to conserve power)
  • It affects these units:

Any model with a 820-3662 Logic Board

Any model with a 820-3787 Logic Board

Macbook Pro 15″ 2013

Macbook Pro 15″ 2014

Macbook Pro 15″ 2015

Macbook Pro 13″ 2013

Macbook Pro 13″ 2014

Macbook Pro 13″ 2015

  • This is a very widespread problem. There are at least thousands of users experiencing this problem.
  • The problem is so well known that: the bug has been given a name, a website has been created dedicated to the bug, and someone is making money with an app that "fixes" the bug. (all it does is grind your CPU so it doesn't go idle)
  • Posts about this problem here in the Apple Discussions have been "vanishing".
  • Apple will charge you $600 to repair it, but they'll give you the same defective hardware/software so the problem inevitably returns. I think the repair is guaranteed for only 90 days. Or they will do such an awful job repairing, that it will cause new problems. Or blame you for water damage. After the last time Apple had my computer, the keyboard light stopped working because somebody didn't plug in the cable properly.
  • Two governments have investigated Apple for their questionable practices. See https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_XneTBhRPYk

So, the solution (finally) is very simple:

Rename '/System/Library/Extensions/AppleThunderboltNHI.kext' to something else. (you'll have to disable system protection first). The system file is used for Ethernet over Thunderbolt. Something that most people won't miss.

Depends on what file you are trying to change. You cannot change anything that is part of macOS because it will be locked even if you turned off system protection.

Maybe you could be more specific about which file you want to change and why you want to change it. Note that if it's a file NOT located in your Home folder, then you cannot change, rename, move, or delete it.
