Unable to update apple ID - email in use is mine on a deleted account

So this was retrospectively not the smartest thing to do, but here is where I am:

  1. I created an apple ID with a new email address, not realizing that I can update my existing one.
  2. I then realized this, and Deleted this new account.
  3. I went to try to use this email address on my existing account by updating my apple ID, but I keep getting errors saying that this email address is taken.
  4. I know for sure that this account has been deleted since I got confirmation of this from apple so the email is NOT in use anymore as an AppleID. Yet I am still unable to update this information.

Any ideas? Is there a waiting period before they release addresses again?

There have been posts by people who have contacted Apple Support and they were told that if you delete an ID associated with an email address, you can never reuse the email address for an Apple ID. You will need to get another e-mail address to use as your Apple ID.
