Preview 'contact sheet' view is distorted

I work as a graphic designer and often use Preview to present work – several page PDFs of designs. The trouble is – when I select 'contact sheet' every image is force-reformatted to fit a square, instead of maintaining the original aspect ratio. As you might have guessed – this does not look good when clients are paying for our work.


This bug has remained through Mojave into Catalina, and it needs to be addressed to keep preview useful on a day to day basis.

That is the price of using a pre-formatted contact sheet that was more than likely intended to simulate a photographic contact sheet for images, not documents. There is no user control over the contact sheet formatting for documents (or images).
