7,1 iMac won't load El Capitan

I recently loaded my mothballed iMac 7,1 with Snow Leopard so that I could load El Capitan. I updated to 10.6.8 without a hitch. Then I downloaded the El Capitan install package (10.11) and run it and get a message that installation was successful. So why is my computer still running 10.6.8? I have 4GB RAM.

Could it be that the installer downloaded but didn't install? Check in your Applications folder for "Install Mac OS El Capitan". If it is there then double-click to begin the install.
