Apple TV remote not responding

So like the title says, the remote isn't responding. Saw a few troubleshooting tips online that suggested to hold the Menu and Volume Up buttons simultaneously, and that did prompt the message that said something along the lines of "Remote pairing, bring closer to Apple TV" but it never successfully paired and the message remained on screen for a minute or two before disappearing. Tried several times to no avail. Any insight or suggestion would be greatly appreciated. Thank you
