How do I view HLS Video

Hi, I've been downloading the movies I've purchased through iTunes. Some download as .m4v files and others as HLS video with a padlock symbol in the icon. I can view the .m4v files offline with Quicktime Player and I presume many other applications, but what applications can I use to play the HLS video files?

When buying a movie (purchased several on 5/22/20), there doesn't seem to be any indicator about the file being HLS or m4v.

    • I now have 2 HLS movies, which I understand can be viewed (and have done) on my ATV4K (Home Sharing from my MacBook Pro movie Library via LAN connection) to the TV app.

  • When purchasing movies, how does one now know whether the file will be m4v or HLS?
    • I can not see any such detail in the movie description.
      • I only saw the HLS designation when I subsequently viewed the movie file download in ~/iTunes Music/Movies folder.
  • After an HLS movie has been downloaded and one sees it's an HLS file, is there a way to re-download as an m4v file?

Not that many others, as the iTunes Store files are protected from sharing around, by locking to your Apple ID account. iTunes, QuickTime Player, Apple TV app. That’s about it.

Apple TV app.

The appleTV app can play it on the computer and can AirPlay it to an AirPlay computable receiver (e.g. AppleTV box, Vizio TV, Samsung TV etc). In the past downloaded ".m4v" files could be served to the Computer app on the AppleTV box but the newer HLS video files in a ".movpkg" container cannot be served to an AppleTV box - you can only use AirPlay.

I hope Apple changes this soon either in a 10.15.4 update on a TVos 14 update.

Movie downloads from the iTunes Store (and Apple TV app Channels) are locked to both the Apple ID and to the device. They cannot be copied/synced to other devices as file transfer. Even if you managed to copy somehow, they would refuse to play because of DRM. Each device will have to download their own copy directly from Apple’s servers.
