AirPlay with MacBook Pro 13" mid 2012

I have a MacBook Pro 13" mid 2012, running Catalina. I want to use AirPlay with my iPad. But when I pull it up in Preferences, it won't let me turn AirPlay on. The dropdown won't change from off, there's no other option.

Is there something I can do to fix this, or will this just not work on my older laptop?

You cannot AirPlay to an iPad.
