Trackpad not working

My trackpad becomes extremely rough and rugged and only a software update to the mac helps. It becomes normal after a software update but until then it's extremely rough and rugged. This has happened twice - what could be wrong?

First try an SMC reset:

How to reset the SMC of your Mac - Apple Support

It is important to make sure you are using the correct resetinstructions for your model and sub-model. Read the article carefully AND fully before doing the reset.

If that does not work, suspect that the battery is swelling. Does the computer "rock" back and forth when placed on a hard, flat surface? Is the trackpad and/or keyboard bulging?

That must be addresses as soon as possible because the swelling will get worse and eventually destroy the computer. Because of COVID19 you cannot take your computer to an Apple Genius bar, so use the "Contact Support" link in the upper right of this page to arrange to ship your computer for service.

If it is the battery causing the issues, do not delay. Every day can see more damage will less chance of recovery.
