Unwanted pop-up ads

every time I use google chrome I get a lot of unwanted pop ups /ads

i am trying to stop them.

is there a way to do this and clean/check my MacBook for any viruses etc. ?

Chrome has a pop-up blocker either built-in to preferences or you can install an extension.
