Difficulties backing up my external hard drive

I just ordered an external hard drive (WD Elements, basic storage 2TB), and i cant seem to get it to back up my documents. I bought it because I do not seems to have anymore space on my computer, but when I try and back it up through time machine, like the directions tell me too it says "time Machine could not create a local snapshot to back up from because there was insufficient free space on the source volume(s)."

Can anyone help me?

That means you don't have enough free space on the boot drive. You're going to have to move/delete stuff off of the boot drive before Time Machine will be able to work.
