If I remove either AirPod from my ear the one remaining in my ear stops working

Both right and left side play. However if I remove either one from my ear the one remaining in my ear stops working? Help! Using iphone11 with latest software.

Thank you for this quick reply. Your comment made me open my mind and realize my stupidity. Your comment naturally WORKS. My older air pods which stopped working worked without having to restart (why I don’t know) they just picked up the transfer and continued on playing. Like Steve Jobs “They just worked”. 🤔. Thanks again and I truly appreciated your quick response.
