Need advice on OS upgrade options

Just purchased a refurbished iMac, circa 2008. It has El Capitan v 10.11.6 for OS. Has 4 GB memory and 250G hard drive. I need to upgrade the operating system; but seems I can't find an option that works - Catalina, even higher El Capitan. Any suggestions?

The version after El Capitan is Sierra but that isn't compatible with a 2008 iMac (it is 2009 and later). See: How to upgrade to macOS Sierra - Apple Support

Also, 10.11.6 was the last update of El Capitan but there were security updates that you may want to see if you have. See: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OS_X_El_Capitan
