Removing files from iCloud

Hi, how does one remove files from iCloud to free up more space?

You can't move files directly from iCloud.com to an external hard drive connected to Mac , you need to set up iCloud Drive https://support.apple.com/en-in/HT204025

Thank you, for the link. Sorry, I should have been more specific with “removal” — I meant, I wanted to transfer those files out of the iCloud and on to an external hard drive, for example, but not necessarily delete them unless I’m able to relocate/transfer those files out of the iCloud first. Is that an option? Please advise.
