Shut down because of a problem

My new MacBook Pro (less than 6 months old) frequently shuts down because of a problem. I get an error message which I send to Apple. Is there someway I can identify whether the problem is software or hardware related?

Learn what to do if your computer restarts or shuts down unexpectedly,

or you get a message that your computer restarted or shut down because

of a problem.
