Okay so in settings on my mac I have verified my iPhone number as an apple ID, yet when I go to messages and preferences to add the number as one of the options where I can be reached at, it isn't there. I just want to use my phone number to send and receive messages on my mac.

Have you enabled Text Message Forwarding on your iPhone? Settings>Messages>Text Message Forwarding.

You need to change the number on your Apple ID. After the change, allow up to 24 hours for the change to sync. Before trying to make the change, sign out of Messages/FaceTime.
