Trying to update my OS from el capitan to catalina. It's stuck on downloading FOREVER. There's enough storage, decent wifi connection and my Mac is compatible (Macbook Pro early 2015 model). Any idea why I can't upgrade?

I'm nervous about upgrading my MacBook Pro (late 2013) from El Capitan to Catalina in the midst of COVID19 restrictions on support. I apparently need Catalina to move my I-Tunes music library from my computer to my phone and the Cloud.
How dangerous is it? Is there a way to easily save a copy of my old system in case it doesn't work? Thanks!
The Catalina download is 8.23GBs in size and can take along time, a cabled connection is preferable to using WiFi.
