Does migrating from an older Mac to a new Mac mean moving or copying files over?

I want to migrate from an old MacBook Pro to a new MacBook Air. Will migrating actually move the files--or just create a copy on the new Mac (so that both computers have the same thing). My preference is that both computers would have the same files--thanks for your time! MV

Migration will copy the files. The original will remain unchanged.

BTW, that’s “standard” behavior: relocating files on the same disk moves them, relocating files between different disks/volumes copies them.
