best upgrades for (white) macbook 2010

I still use my old white macbook (last one they made).
But i want to upgrade it so i can use it a few more years.
I already upgraded the RAM memory from 2gb to 4gb. Thats the maximum input in can get. I took these chips out of my imac of late 2009.
a few days ago i wanted to factory reset my macbook to give it a clean start. But that went wrong. I couldnt reinstall the macos. Contacted apple support but they didnt have a solution. So i had to put back a time machine backup.
Now my question are:
Is it usefull to put in new Ram memory? My current ram memory is more then 10 years old. Or do these chips dont go bad? and if they do how do i know there are going bad? And wich one do i put in exactly? i'm losing track in all the options.
I also want to put in an ssd. Can i put in anything i want that fits? or do i best use certain models/brands?
And then there is my biggest question. Wich os x do i install best. Currently i have snow leoperd after putting back the backup. But before i installed "el capitan". I have the feeling that my macbook is a bit faster now i put the backup back.
Is it worth it to upgrade my old macbook?
I wil only use it for some internet an very rarely type some documents. I also have a desktop computer witch i use for video editing. The macbook is just for some relaxing. so i dont want to spend to much money on this old macbook. But i also think its a waist to just throw it away while i could still good for a few more years.

ps. The current os x installed is 10.6.8. but i have problems with upgrading my internet browers because they dont suport it anymore.
