Catalina/Office for Mac 2011

I understand that if I upgrade to Catalina (I now have High Sierra 10.13.6) on my Mac I can't open my Mac Office 20111 programs or directly open my Mac Office 2011 Word and other docs. If I upgrade to Office 365 can I open the old docs with it once I upgrade to Catalina? If I upgrade to Office 365 first can I "modernize" my Office 2011 docs in some way with Office 365 so that after I then upgrade to Catalina, I can I open the "old" docs with Office 365? Can I use the Catalina version of Pages, Keynote and Numbers to open the docs made on Office 2011 in the corresponding programs once I upgrade to Catalina? Or is the bottom line that if I upgrade to Catalina, my Office 2011 docs are dead unless I keep them on a separate computer with a pre-Catalina OS or make hard copies first? I've been using Office 2011 for long time and would hate to be unable to open the documents in some way after upgrading to Catalina so I can print and edit them further if I need to? (I see that PrintShop is dead to Catalina so far because there's no 64 bit version yet, meaning once I upgrade to Catalina I can't open old docs (or create new ones); I hope the former's not the case with Office 2011 docs (I know I could create new ones once I upgrade to Office 365).
