Internet Speed with MacBook Pro

I was having problems with my Internet speed on my MacBook Pro, connected by cable (WiFi turned off).

My ISP sent a technician to check the installation. He arrived, opened his PC and connected it to directly to the router (as I previously did). He launched the Internet Explorer and run speedtest.net. To my great surprise it got 605 MB for download and 621 MB for upload. Immediately after I connect the MacBook Pro and it got 107 MB for download and 92 MB for upload. We waited and repeated the tests, with same results...

Then he connected his mobile, Samsung, to the wifi and the speed test results were similar. My iPhone were terrible in comparison...

I can not manage the get good Internet speed with my Apple devices while the technician equipment registered stellar Internet speed.

How could dI fix this?!

try this experiment:

Restart in Safe mode (hold shift at Startup). Your Mac starts, does a five minute disk repair as it starts up, then loads only a minimal set of Apple-only extensions, not including graphics acceleration. Screen updates will be wonky and slow, but ultimately correct. No third-party extensions are loaded.

Run Internet speed test. The numbers you get here would be what you could achieve if there were no "junk" slowing your MacOS down. I would expect them to be similar to, but not identical to, the numbers you got running Windows.

If you are seeing slowness on Ethernet, you likely have something slowing down your computer. To make progress, download and run this little "discovery" Utility, designed to collect performance and software information about your computer. It fixes nothing. It generates a report that can be posted to a reply in the forums, and readers can help you analyze what is happening.

You have multiple different security services loaded. when you do this, each thing one security program does looks like a Malware attack to each of the others. Your Mac slows dramatically, and you get NOTHING done. Remove them ALL.

Nothing beyond what already ships in the box is required for your premium-quality Macintosh computer.

You have a highly-modified Hosts file. this is sometimes done tofaclitate Web site development, but can also be a sign of problems.

You have a Bit torrent loaded. the part Users forget is that they promise to share their resources and software back to the other users of the Torrent, draining their computer's resources. This should be removed.

You are using an unnecessary VNC. Unless you need it to connect to a Corporate network, a VNC adds complexity and slows your connection for NO increase in protection. Sounds cool, does nothing for you. Your Wi-Fi is encrypted already, your Home network is proteced by the built-in firewall and N.A.T. and web sites all use encryption. If you need more protection than that, use Tor Browser, used for folks in the Federal Witness Protection Program.

More than one antivirus app - This machine has multiple antivirus apps installed.

Antivirus software: Apple, One Periodic, and CleanMyMac

You have a remarkable amount of "junk" added. "Junk" in this context is stuff that may be perfectly good, but you do to need out and underfoot every day, like stuff that is (or should be) in the Attic.

This is punishing performance. Typical CPU Usage when idle is under 2 percent system and under 2 percent User. Yours are MUCH larger:

CPU Usage Snapshot:

Type Overall

System: 13 %

User: 25 %

Idle: 63 %

As for Network use, Dropbox is your top network user. It is a known "Bad-Actor". Since it is not MacOS native, it does not know how to use MacOS data structures to find recently changed folders. When allowed to run as a Startup Item, it runs all the time. It is worse than anti-virus software, because it not only scans all your files non-stop, it [inexcusably] scans the copies on the Internet non-stop. The solution of this bad boy (if you insist on using it) is to set it to run only on demand -- when you have something you want synchronized.

Well, I can quit DropBox and only use it when I need to sync something... but I'm happy with the performance of the MacBook Pro I have... EtreCheck says it's "Excellent".

The only thing is the Internet connection speed is very low.

For example: I have my machine connected with the RJ-45, I run a speediest and I got low values for upload and download.

Immediately after, I take out the cable and plug it into a PC with Windows 10: the Internet speed it 4 times faster !

That's the only problem I have.

Don't know what could be the culprit...

Etrecheck 'excellent' rating is for the execution SPEED of Etrecheck, NOTHING MORE. It is most influenced by Disk I/O speed. There is no problem with your disk I/O speed.

Your complaint of Internet speed is a valid one, and some of the causes are the things I have listed.

But you still have a very large collection of things that could be continuing to slow down your computer in general, and these will contribute to slow internet connection.

if you run Windows without Dropbox and all the other "Junk", you can see how fast it could be once you clean up the "junk" you have installed in MacOS!
