I restarted 3-4 times with the same result. I had tried logging in to other profile accounts on the MB Pro but they had the same problem. I could type in my password but my home screen never opened. I wound up calling support and they walked me through restarting in Safe Mode (holding Shift key while powering on) but it didn't fix the problem. Then the tech had me boot in Recovery mode (hitting power button plus Ctrl+R until Apple logo appears). First Aid was run in the Disk Utility. We tried it twice. Then I restarted to see if I could log in. That didn't work so the tech gave me verbal instructions to reinstall the operating system (Catalina) later (I had to troubleshoot my DSL first). After reinstalling the operating system, I was able to log in and have the home screen open. I'm very thankful for the support technician's help. Thank you too for your suggestions.

Hello cavallaro,

Thanks for using Apple Support Communities! I see you're having an issue with fully starting up your Mac to your user profile, and I'd like to help.

Have you restarted your MacBook Pro since noticing this issue? If not, go ahead and do that, as a restart can resolve unusual issues.

If you're still having the same issue, what happens after you enter in your user account password?

If you start up in safe mode, are you able to successfully reach your desktop? How to use safe mode on your Mac

It may take longer to finish the start up, as safe mode does some system checks, and can sometimes resolve issues. You'll also see some differences in the display. This is expected with safe mode, and when you restart normally, they'll be gone. After starting up in safe mode, restart normally and see if you're successful with reaching your desktop.

If you are still unable to fully start up, do you have another user account, or even the Guest account to try?

Thanks!
