Getting a new Mac, need to transfer some files and applications to my new Mac from a Time Machine backup of my old mac

I am getting a new Mac delivered and I want to transfer some of the files and Applications from a Time Machine backup to my new Mac.

Several years ago, I tried do it and ended up, accidentally, completing restoring my Time Machine backup to my new Mac. I don't want to do the same thing.

Hello Cheetaux,

I understand you would like some help restoring your new Mac from a Time Machine backup. I'm happy to help you out with this.

Here are steps you will need to follow in order to restore from your Time Machine backup: Restore your Mac from a backup. It's hard to say which wrong turn was taken that resulted in you accidentally erasing your Mac when you tried to restore before. However, as long as you follow the steps exactly as they are written that should not happen again.

If you plan to sell, trade, or give away your old Mac after you've transferred everything to the new one, here are some additional steps on what to do next: What to do before you sell, give away, or trade in your Mac.

Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.

Take care.
