External speakers
I have an old iMac 24" (early 2008) now running OS X El Capitan with external Altec speakers and midrange woofer that no longer plays thru the external speakers. The speakers work, restart didn't help. Can you?

Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at startup), does the problem occur in Safe Mode?
Safe mode attempts to repair Disks & clears lots of caches, so if Safe Mode works try again in regular boot.
