set up apple tv without app on tv

The Apple TV app and Apple TV hardware are two distinct things. The app gives access to iTunes purchases as well as Apple TV Chanel subscriptions on smart TV's whereas the hardware does that and so much more. Support for the app has no bearing on whether one can use the Apple TV hardware.

You can either control it using the supplied remote, the remote app, or pair it with a universal remote.
