Sabrent NVMe SSD :: Catalina panics and reboots with these SSDs...

I've just migrated to a new 8-core i9 MBP 16 2019 (32GB).

Latest Catalina 10.15.5. The "old" one was a 6-core MBP 15 2018 (16GB), with "inflated batteries" (incredible for such a premium machine, but... this is another story).

I was using an external NVMe SSD 1TB from Samsung (970 EVO): never had a problem. But... full.

So I've bought a Sabrent 2TB (Rocket with TLC chips, pretty fast on paper).

I did try to migrate MBP 2018 to 2019 using time machine on this new Sabrent SSD.

I had to reapeat the backup creation for about 6-8 times, 'cos the old MBP did creash / panic and reboot a lot of times during the backup creation (always with a IOSCSI error, so disk related).

Then even the new MBP 16, using the same SSD, did crash as well many times during the restore... so that at the end I did use a different old Samsung SSD drive to finalise the migration.

Before returning the Sabrent to Amazon I did try changing the case/enclosure (both NVMe USB 3.1 Gen 2 compatible) but I keep on suffering the same exact problem.

Then I even tried to copy a large quantity of data (about 500GB) from my NAS to the Sabrent, but I kept having the same problem: after some time the SSD "detached" from the Mac and, after some minutes more of timeout, the machine crashed and rebooted.

Consider I even tried to use some dry ice to keep the SSD aluminium enclosure cold (thinking maybe the high volume of transferred data caused too much heat). No results.

OK, so I thought to have received a defective SSD and sent it back to Amazon, ordering a new one, exactly the same model.

And today I tried it up the new one. Curious to know? Same exact problem.

These SSD cannot sustain an high traffic on Catalina: after some minutes they detach and crash the system.

Even more... something that I cannot understand, after the crash I cannot anymore detach/reconnect the SSD to the system: Catalina does not see the drive. Even changing the USB port. Even changing the case/controller.

But it is possible to connect it to my iPad Pro.

Bottom line: is this an operating system problem or an SSD problem? Or... is it a compatibility problem between Catalina and THIS Sabrent model? (the Samsung EVO 970 and 860 that I have do work).
