Safari opens new tabs

One day just randomly my safari now opens a new tab every time i click on a new link from a google search page for example and its annoying and i don't know how to stop it

If you go to Safari Preferences > Tabs, -you can select how you want links to be treated. Where it says Open Pages in Tabs…

To the right, select Never if you don't want tabs
