Low Picture Quality with iMovie Exports?

So I’ve been attempting to use iMovie (on Mac) to add music to an image (for posting on Instagram)...

I’ve been using extremely high-quality images. However, the quality of the images always gets horribly degraded every time I export them.

I’ve played around with all the output quality settings. No difference.

can anybody clarify how to get the image quality the same as the actual pictures I’m importing into the projects?

Were these iPhone photos taken in the HEIC format? If so, go to your iPhone Settings/Photos/Transfer to Mac or PC and click on the "Automatic" option to export in a more compatible format.

Or, put one of the photos into the Photos app and do a File/Export 1 photo as a jpeg. See if that improves the image quality in iMovie.
