For some reason my Mac failed and I had to reinstall mac os from online recovery. I first erased my partition to mac os journal then choose reinstall mac, (mountain lion). The recovery downloads the mac for some time, an hour maybe, then boots to a question mark folder. Not really sure about the reason behind this error, could you please help?

I found a solution for this strange problem. Seems that when I was in the online recovery downloading the OS X the device goes to sleep or restarts after a while, and when I open it later it boots from the start to nowhere, this is why it boots to the question mark.
Could be solved by constantly moving the cursor every 2 minutes during the installation. Not sure why this happened but it's fixed now.

Odd. The ? means it can't find an operating system to boot from. Despite you installing one. Could be a hardware fault, but I suspect not.
Try it again. Occasionally these types of issues just work after a second attempt.
Are you saying that actually works? I would have thought that booting from recovery mode, it would not fail simply because it went to sleep. After all, the option to stop it doing is only accessible once macOS is is already installed.
I'm not really sure why that worked but it did. I was installing via clamshell mode, perhaps this is why the error happened causing the macbook to shut down or interrupt downloading after some time of inactivity?

Ah. Very possibly.
Clamshell mode can sleep during the process of switching from the internal
screen and the external one.
