flash drive for a ipad air first edition can you advise witch one will work as i bought a y-disk flash drive it works on my iphone6/6plus but not on the ipad air why

Your first generation iPad Air cannot be updated to iPadOS13.x - this being prerequisite to being able to transfer files between the iPad and external storage devices.

iOS12 and earlier is considerably more limited in its capability to use external media - functionality typically being limited to importing images from camera media.
