How do I connect a MacBook Air (Retina 2019) to an Ethernet network ?

I have tried using the Apple Thunderbolt to Gigabit Ethernet Adapter (MD463LL/A) + Apple Thunderbolt 3 to Thundebolt 2 Adapter (MMEL2AM/A) to connect my MacBook Air (Retina 2019) directly to my router using an Ethernet cable and was unable to do so. Can anyone help ? Does Apple expect that all MacBook Airs from now on must connect over wifi ?? Thank you
