Trying to find “Hardware” on my iMac so I can use the SD slot

In Finder Preferences : General, select at least the first three items under Show these items on the desktop.

Your SD Card slot on your iMac is automatically enabled when you insert a compatible SD card into it, and will then appear on your Desktop.

Also make sure you have all four of these options checked in the Finder/General preference pane:
