How to tell if a serial number is clear or stolen

I’m buying a MacBook from another person off internet how do I know if the MacBook is free and clear and not stolen?

Purchasing an Apple notebook (or anything) from an unknown third-party will always come at a risk. Do not let price fool you. As the saying goes: "If it is too good to be true, then it's too good to be true."


Apple does provide a means to verify if one of their products is currently being supported, but not if it is reported as lost or stolen. If you get an "invalid serial number" as a response, the device would be suspect.


Even if this notebook turns out to be legit, be sure that the owner prepared it properly so that you can gain access to it. Provide them with this link: What to do before you sell, give away, or trade in your Mac - Apple Support
