I Encrypted External drive but How does it work?

I formatted my 4 TB external drive using APFS Encrypted format from Disk Utility.

It tells me that the drive is encrypted and it asked me to choose a pasword, which i did.

But each time I click on the drive in Finder, it displays all the files within it. Isn't it supposed to prompt me for a password prior to making the contents visible? It doesn't do so.

You saved the password in your keychain. There have been various reports here indicating that it might just do that automatically even if you didn't choose that option.

Open Keychain access and find the entry for the drive's password and delete it.
