I did not receive any warning that my old version of word that I purchased would not work with the upgraded system and I would have to pay a yearly fee to keep microsoft office. I am retired and did not need or want an upgraded version.

Is there any way to go back to 32 bit system and restore my old office version?

Revert your Mac to a previous macOS version - Apple Support

FWIW, Apple has been warning users about the transition to 64-bit-only in Catalina for well over a year.
