IPad Pro screen goes black but video continues to play

Hi. My iPad Pro has started to have a screen issue. The screen goes blank but the app carries on working. Eg YouTube video will still carry on playing. I have plugged iPad into an external monitor and it displays correctly.

Questions: is this a hard ware failure. Is there a fix.
