how do i find out what operating system my mac is running and how do i update it if needed

Provided that you are booted into macOS, then menu : About This Mac panel will inform you of the version of macOS currently running, and the Mac description line's parenthesis will report what Mac (e.g. Late-2013, etc.) that you are using. That parenthetical information is important as it helps you determine your Mac's hardware compatibility for newer operating system releases. For instance, here is the pertinent information from the Mac I am typing:



Reply with your macOS version, and the entire Mac description line, not just the red box content from above.
