I have a 27-inch, Late 2012 iMac (compatible per Apple) running macOS Mojave Version 10.14.6. Upgrading to macOS Catalina is not an option in the App Store. What gives?

In Catalina, updates for the OS appear in Software Update System Preferences, and I thought it did so in Mojave. I seem to remember people complaining that Software Update kept pushing the Catalina upgrade.
Dang. I just got schooled like a n00b. Can we keep this between us? ha
In the past, did the upgrades show with notification in the app store or am I remembering incorrectly?
