I'm trying to turn in an old phone to get credit towards my new phone and I want the old one clean, but when i started deleting contacts it was deleting off the new phone. How do I keep that from happening?

If I remove an old phone that my contacts, how do i keep them on my new phone without losing them? I started deleting some numbers off the old phone and it was deleting numbers off the new phone
