I can't update from mojave to catalina

I have a 2019 macbook pro, which is currently running mojave 10.14.

I loaded all its contents from time machine from my old laptop.

However, when I try to update from mojave to catalina, i either get a thing saying that there are no updates available, or that my laptop is 'unable to check for updates - make sure to connect to the internet' even though my laptop is connected to the internet.

Is there anything I can do to fix this?

Do you have any kind of "security" software installed?

Try booting into Safe Mode and see if you can log into iCloud and the App Store.

Hey, thanks for the reply. What you said makes loads of sense.

But, I tried to go on the app store and it says 'cannot connect to app store' even thought i'm connected to the internet.

It then asks me to log into my apple ID and then it tells me this 'An unexpected error occurred while signing in. The operation couldn’t be completed. (NSURLErrorDomain error -1012.)'.

I've made sure my date and time are all correct, because i know that this often causes this issue.

Could you possibly suggest anything else i could do?

Cheers
