Gmail and Apple Mail problems

Thanks, that WAS helpful, though it's only part way to solving my problem.

The first reference tells me how to stop "All Mail" showing in Mac Mail. I'm not sure if I want to do that or not, but it is helpful to know.

The second reference says that only non-archived incoming emails are in Gmail Inbox, so that emails in the various categories are not included in Gmail Inbox. If this were true, then it would explain my problem though it wouldn't solve it. It would mean I cannot see all Gmail in Mac Mail except via "All Mail", because Mac Mail doesn't show the categories. But I have plenty of emails in the category folders that are also in Inbox.

Also, I thought there was no mail in the categories, they are just tags. In which case where are the emails that are not in the Inbox or Spam?

Finally, I found this page which says: "As a user, you’re free to select one, a few or all of these categories. Gmail automatically adjusts to match your preferences and actions." But it doesn't say I can eliminate them completely. So it seems, so far, that no matter what I do, I can't see everything in my Gmail using Mac Mail, except via the All Mail/Archive folder, which is messy.

I'm wondering whether Google wants to discourage people reading Gmail in another Mail client? Certainly it seems I'm better not to have a hybrid system, but move to either all Gmail or all Apple Mail.

Not that I'm aware of. I first became aware of a problem of mail from my Wordpress site going to Spam. I have now solved that (I think) by getting my ISP to send Wordpress emails out under the ISP's SMTP. It was then that I noticed this issue of some incoming mail only appearing in All Mail. Just as was typing my previous reply, an email came in from my Wordpress and it didn't go to spam, but that was maybe because I have a rule to stop that. But it didn't appear anywhere else, just in All Mail. I think the two problems occurred at the same time but I can't be sure. I certainly only noticed them around the same time.

Yes, mostly. I currently have an issue with being unable to mail from my ISP's email accounts because of some server issue (the error message says "The server response was: SMTP-AUTH is not allowed on port 25" ) but I can send out on our other (shared) Mac without a problem (that Mac isn't connected to this Gmail account).

Rules for the three websites I manage, but none for Gmail.

I haven't done this for several reasons, but I will if it is necessary.

I think so. But since I usually access it via Mac Mail, I don't really know.
