sort orders in Numbers & multiple column sorting

Using latest versions of MAC/Numbers.

I would like to sort a column in numbers ascending such that e.g '1.1' follows '1' and then '2' follows '1.1'. Numbers clearly implements the scheme that '1.1' follows '2' and not '1'. Is there a workaround?

I tried adding a column. In column 1 are only whole numbers e.g. '1' & '2' and in column 2 it has decimal values e.g. 1.1. When I try to use multiple column sorting to achieve the order in the above paragraph, Numbers do not act on the rule for column 2
