The Mail app on my Air keeps crashing. I am trying to uninstall the app (I don't care if I lose data) so that I can then reinstall and see if that helps. The instructions on the support page about how to delete the app are not applicable to Air.

Mail cannot be deleted from the OS. You can try some troubleshooting by using: How to use safe mode on your Mac - Apple Support.
If Safe Mode is not solving your problem, try to: Download macOS High Sierra 10.13.6 Combo Update

Upon further reflection, I would not consider that a backup. I would recommend that you have at least, either a Time Machine Backup, or a Bootable Backup. If you had either one of those it would be possible to consider: How to reinstall macOS from macOS Recovery - Apple Support

I "was" in the Navy. The video display in Safe Mode is not very stable...nothing out of the ordinary there.
You may also want to try these steps:

Please verify that you are already using macOS High Sierra. What system is displayed when you select >About This Mac?"
If your installed system is High Sierra, you could try to install the Combo Update using Safe Mode.
Do you have a backup for your computer?
I'm in the midst of moving and had to go back to my old house to get an external hard drive! Got it; did a time machine back-up, then did the "plist" thing mentioned above. Interestingly enough, there weren't any files with mail in the name field.
Should I try to do the reinstall macOS from macOS Recovery now?
BTW, my son is in flight school in Meridian!
Yes, now that you have a Time Machine backup.
Use the ReInstall macOS option.
I also spent some time at NAS Meridian as a flight student and as an instructor. Best wishes for his journey in obtaining his Wings of Gold.
Thank you so much, Ferd for your quick reply. I tried Safe mode but it still crashed. When I tried to download 10.13.6, I got this:

Didn't work : (. I got the same message as before. This time in safe mode my screen was wiggling like an old TV.
